Wind Mitigation Inspection
The Florida OIR-B1-1802 form that documents wind-resistant features of your home and unlocks insurance credits. We inspect, sign, and send a copy to your agent so the discount actually lands.
Almost every Florida homeowner.
Wind mitigation credits sit on the table waiting to be claimed. The inspection is how you claim them.
A wind mit at policy binding can drop your initial premium meaningfully, especially if the home has hip roof, impact glass, or hurricane shutters.
New roof, new windows, or new shutters since your last wind mit? A fresh inspection captures the new credits.
Florida wind mit forms generally remain valid 5 years. If yours is expiring, we'll get an updated one on file before your next renewal.
The four feature categories on the OIR-B1.
Each section is documented with photos and dimensional notes. The form is signed and delivered in the format Florida carriers expect.
Roof shape & covering
Hip vs. gable vs. flat roofs perform very differently in high winds. Carriers credit hip roofs, modern shingle ratings, and roof-deck attachment.
- Roof geometry (hip / gable / flat)
- Roof covering type and rating
- Year of roof installation / permit
- Florida Building Code compliance
Roof deck attachment
How the roof deck is fastened to the trusses (nail size, spacing, plywood vs. OSB). The biggest single credit category for many homes.
- Nail type, size, spacing
- Sheathing thickness and material
- Truss spacing
- Roof-to-wall connections
Opening protection
Windows, doors, garage doors, and skylights. Impact-rated glass, hurricane shutters, and code-compliant garage doors all earn credits.
- Impact-rated windows and doors
- Hurricane shutters (any approved type)
- Garage door wind rating
- Skylight protection
Secondary water resistance
Self-adhering peel-and-stick under the roof covering reduces water intrusion if the primary roof fails. Modest but worthwhile credit when present.
- Documented SWR membrane
- Coverage and material confirmation
Credits stack. Sometimes substantially.
A home with a hip roof, code-rated roof deck attachment, impact glass, and a Florida-Code garage door can stack credits across all four OIR-B1 categories. We document every credit your home actually qualifies for.
We don't quote insurance numbers; your agent does. But many Florida homeowners find the inspection pays for itself in the first year of premium savings.
Carriers can only credit what's on the form. If your roof passes the FBC standard but the form says "unknown," you don't get the credit. We measure, photograph, and document so nothing is missed.
A signed report in your agent's inbox is faster than emailing it to yourself and forwarding. Provide the email when you submit and we'll cc you on the delivery.
New roof, hurricane shutters, impact windows. If you've made wind-resistant improvements since your last form, the new credits are waiting on a fresh inspection.
A short checklist before we arrive.
If you have any of the following, dig them out. They speed up the inspection and increase the credits we can document.
- Roof permit or installation paperwork
- Window manufacturer labels or impact ratings
- Garage door wind-rating sticker
- Shutter receipts or installation records
- Attic hatch unobstructed
- Garage cleared enough to read door label
- Pets secured
- Gate, lockbox, and entry codes shared

Wind Mitigation across Florida.
South and Central Florida, anywhere south of Seminole County. Coastal homes especially benefit, but inland properties qualify too.
How long is a Wind Mitigation report valid?
Generally 5 years from the inspection date in Florida, unless the home is altered (new roof, new openings, etc.) in a way that changes the credits.
Is wind mitigation worth it?
On most Florida homes with hip roofs, impact glass, or hurricane shutters, the credits more than pay for the inspection in the first year. Even on simpler homes the inspection is typically worthwhile.
Do I need a wind mit if the seller's is current?
The seller's wind mit may transfer to your policy, but it's worth checking. Reports older than ~3 years often miss credits the home now qualifies for, especially if any roofing or window work has been done.
Can you send the report to my insurance agent?
Yes. Provide your agent's email when you submit the request and we'll send a signed copy directly. You'll be cc'd.
